What inspired you to write post-apocalyptic books?
About a decade after I started getting into preparedness for myself and my new family, I decided to apply my writing talents cultivated through a twenty-year writing and journalism career. I’ve wanted to write a book since I was five, so I figured why not?
So you're a "doomsday prepper"?
I don’t like or use that term, despite COVID-19 making prepping a common-sense thing to do, but yes, I am – to the extent that my time, budget and (hopefully) burgeoning novelist career allow.
What prompted you to get into preparedness?
Turn on the news for five minutes or just look around you – our society is ripping itself apart, all of our institutions are failing, nothing is getting done, and nothing works. I’m becoming more convinced with each passing day that the United States has become a late-stage republic, and if this trend isn’t reversed, and fast, it’s going to fall.
Why did you decide to self-publish?
Believe it or not, my manuscript for Big Sky Fallen actually made it to the top of a real-live literary agent’s slush pile and she offered me representation to find a Big Five publisher. Two months after she agreed to take me on, in a case of rotten luck for the ages, COVID-19 struck – and my agent was in the unenviable position of trying to shop an SHTF pandemic novel around during an actual SHTF pandemic. It went exactly as well as you would expect. We parted on amicable terms – fate dealt us a lousy hand – and I’m now taking the self-publishing route.

Who are your favorite post-apocalyptic authors?
My go-to authors are James Wesley, Rawles (that’s one guy – the comma is part of his name), William Forstchen, Kyla Stone, and Glen Tate. And while his sarcastic wit and in-your-face politics aren’t everybody’s cup of tea, I enjoy the Kelly Turnbull novels by Kurt Schlichter. Other favorite authors include Tom Clancy and Emily St. John Mandel.
If you had to pick one book to read on a desert island, what would it be?
A book showing me how to survive on a desert island. If there’s no such thing, The Stand will do – you’re not burning through that one in a day.
